Who invented Hieroglyphics?


Hieroglyphics were first discovered when Napoleon’ troops made the discovery in 1799 of the Rosetta Stone, Napoleon's troops provided the critical information which allowed Jean-François Champollion, taking into account the work of other scholars, to discover the nature of the script by the 1820s.

The ancient Egyptians believed that writing was created by the god Thoth; and called their hieroglyphic script "mdju netjer" (words of the gods). The word hieroglyph comes from the Greek hieros (sacred) also glyph (inscriptions) was first used by Clement of Alexandria.

Hieroglyphics were created around 3000 B.C, so roughly about 5,000 years ago. Hieroglyphics are the oldest known language along with Greek and Sumerian archaic, Hieroglyphs can be read from left to right, right to left as well as from top to bottom. Kings and queens names are placed inside a cartouche. In the hieroglyphic writing system, vowels are usually not written. If multiple symbols are be placed on top of each other on the same line, you read the top symbol first.
